Christian MASQUELIER          @ LRCS - Amiens

My research activities, since 1988, focus on the crystal chemistry of Li+, Ag+ or Na+-containing solid state electrolyte ceramics and on Li+/ Na+ intercalation compounds to be used as positive electrodes in rechargeable batteries.

We try to address complex phenomena and properties of ionic conduction, non-stoichiometry, phase transitions, electrochemical insertion/extraction within several structural families of materials, oxides, phosphates, silicates, borates, ..., of transition metal elements.

Numerous crystal structure determination studies are conducted by means of X-Ray and Neutron diffraction, on polycristalline powders and single crystals, so as to correlate these crystal structures with the observed properties. Among significant structural determinations of NEW materials or NEW forms of already known materials are :

Na7Fe3(P2O7)4 : big superstructure due to Na-Vacancy ordering in a 2-D ion conductor

(papers #1 (1990), #2 (1991), #5 (1994) with F. d'YVOIRE and G. COLLIN)

Na7Fe4(AsO4)6 : 1 Fe2+ / 3 Fe3+ charge ordering within a Fe4O18 Cluster

(paper #10 (1995) with F. d'YVOIRE and G. COLLIN)

Li3Fe2(PO4)3 : the NASICON - analogue was prepared for the first time by ion exchange from Na3Fe2(PO4)3. A new crystallographic site, Li(3), was spoted for Lithium (space group R-3)

(papers #16 (1997), #17 (1997), #22 (1998), #32 (2000) with J. B. GOODENOUGH, J. RODRIGUEZ-CARVAJAL, A.K. PADHI, J. GAUBICHER, L.F. NAZAR)

LiMn2O4 : discovery of charge ordering for the stoichiometric composition, below RT, in a 3x3 orthorhombic supercell (space group Fddd)

LiFePO4 and FePO4 : magnetic structures published for the first time. Interesting phenomena of super super exchange interactions in isostructural frameworks

VP2O7: a new V4+ - containing di-phosphate, obtained by chemical or electrochemical extraction of Li+ from LiVP2O7

(papers with C. WURM anf G. ROUSSE

Li2FeSiO4 : A new form of Li2FeSiO4, obtained by quenching at 700°C, was determined for the first time, in space group P21/n

Na3Ti2(PO4)3 : big superstructure due to Na/vacancy ordering at low temperature, for this Ti3+-containing NASICON-based material.

(papers with H. KABOUR, O. MENTRE, G. ROUSSE

(papers with S. HAMELET, M. CASAS-CABANAS,

(papers with Y. DENG and S.ISLAM

(papers with E. BOIVIN, L. CROGUENNEC, J.N. CHOTARD,

(papers with L.F. NAZAR, G. ROUSSE, J.N. CHOTARD,

(papers with M. BIANCHINI, L. NGUYEN,

Na3PS4 : A new polymorph, named "gamma" was discovered to crystallize as a "plastic crystal" above 500°C with super fast Na+ ion transport properties.
